The beginnings of jazz and the story of Buddy Bolden are inextricably intertwined. Much of this book was first published in the 70s, but there are several updates that bring things pretty much up to date. Marquis took a very different tack, starting with every reference to the legendary creator of jazz and tracking down all the hard evidence relating to his brief, tumultuous life that could be accessed. The only item missing that I was able to spot was a failure to mention James “Buddy” Bolden, a former trumpeter with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and currently BB King’s lead trumpet and band leader, who is said to be a descendant of the book’s bddy.

Information that would be well suited to footnotes and appendices of which there is plenty are included directly in the text, slogging the reader down with frivolous information.

Although its impossible to read the description without thinking of the recent tragedy that beset the city, New Orleans is portrayed as a jubilant place filled with spontaneous parades and celebrations and, most importantly, the development of a unique style of playing that became jazz.
