There is no real description of the differences that make up the world outside of what the main character is experiencing. We also know that Hesse was fascinated with magic. But I didn’t realize it was more of a biography type book, at least in the sense of how it was told. They would much rather pay in money and goods than in trust and love. That, I think, is the greatest quality of this book. I came out very conflicted, and therefore this write-up may turn out to reflect that. And, if you honestly DID, enjoy it, for the love of god tell me why, without summarizing the book. A good Tratactus on Society; on what distinguishes the normal ones from the elite ones. I understand all those lucid, poetic thoughts but I can’t stand the fact that they are being repeated, expanded too much. Refresh and try again. I wish I had not. What was the point of that?
And so people of a certain bent will think about themselves and their actions, in Castalia, in Hesse’s day, and in ours. Maybe that was the point! What I am seeking is not so much fulfillment of idle curiosity or of a aablorios for worldly life, but experience without reservations. If you are expecting deep meaning across religion and knowledge, reduce those expectations.
His was gesse of those natures which can sicken, languish, and die when they see an ideal they have believed in, or the country and community they love, afflicted with ills. I did I like Herman Hesse. For the most part, I liked the book.
