It took me a little bit to warm up to, but in the end I found this an enjoyable read. In addition to the traitorous intrigues of villains, Cazaril and the Royesse Iselle, are faced with a sinister byjold that hangs like a sword over the entire blighted House of Chalion and all who stand in their circle.

This not being a Vorkosigan book it took me a while to settle in, to get used to the unfamiliar world, people, and situation. Throughout, Bujold gives a number of familiar fantasy tropes — the roles of magic, gods, fate, and duty — the kind of good intellectual workout that rejuvenates them and makes them seem fresh and exciting.
